A total of twelve Blackhawk High School students and twenty seven Highland Middle School students attended the Youngstown State University English Festival on April 22 or 23. In order to attend, each student had to read seven books pre-selected by the YSU English Festival committee. This year's selections included several books from visiting author Gary Schmidt, who spoke to the students both days. In addition to attending the author lecture, the students competed in various competitions against nearly 1000 other students from Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. We had eight winners over those two days!
Michelle Noell (11th grade) won first prize in Renga Riot Poetry
Raina McKoen (10th grade) won honorable mention in Impromptu Writing
Dougan Szewczyk (9th grade) won honorable mention in Writing Games
Kayleigh Zagorski (9th grade) won honorable mention in Writing Games.
Brynn MacQueen (7th grade) won honorable mention in Writing Games
Abigail Ronk (7th grade) won honorable mention in Writing Games.
Katherine Alford (7th grade) won 2nd place in Not So Trivial Pursuit.
Lynnell Fry (7th grade) won 3rd place in Not So Trivial Pursuit.
